Abstract

The Aim of the present study Evaluate the effectiveness of two methods of music and Chess teaching with traditional instruction in the primary boys pupils on geometric learning. The Method was Experimental study with pre test-post test and control groups. The sample consisted of 30 male students in second grade (7), third grade (13) and fourth grade (10) from Shahid  Khonsari school. They were randomly selected from public and private schools in Tehran’s first zone. These samples were randomly divided into three groups, in experimental groups, one group of chess Training alongside traditional. Instruction, another group music training alongside traditional Instruction third group (control) received only traditional instruction (10 students were assigned to each group). Data of this study was to test the k-Math revised three major mathematical concepts, operations and applications assessed. Findings: Data Analysis from analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used. The Results showed that the efficacy of music and chess training along with the traditional training was more than the traditional method in learning of geometric alone. Paired comparisons showed that the difference between the learning of mathematical between music and chess training group and the control group was significant. But the differences in this variable between the chess training group and control difference between the learning of geometric between the chess training group and the music training group was not significant. Since both music and chess teaching impact on a common cognitive areas such as intelligence, problem solving, attention, memory, spatial reasoning skills, reading skills, learning and all these areas have a fundamental role in mathematics learning, It seems that the effectiveness of these two approaches on this area were similar. As a result, the difference between the effectiveness of these two approaches to learning math is not observed.
