On the investigation of relation between coping styles and the intensity level of perceived pain among people affected with chronic pain and comparison of affected people with normal people in the eight personality components of MMPI

Abstract

The current research aimed to investigate the relation of coping styles with the level of perceived chronic pain and comparison of affected people with regard to personality components in the academic year of 2014-2015. Research method is descriptive that falls under the correlation studies. The statistical population of the current research was constituted by all the patients affected with the chronic pain who were referring to Tehran's Pain Clinics, out of whom the number of 150 people was selected through in access sampling method. Tools applied for the measurement of research variables were: Gallows Coping Styles Inventory, McGill Chronic Pain Rating Inventory and the Minnesota multifaceted Personality. Data were analyzed by the SPSS software and the Pearson correlation Test. Findings: The result of the Pearson Correlation Test for the main hypothesis of the research indicated that coping styles have positive impacts on the degree of perceived chronic pain among people affected (p=0/000, r=-0/479) and the personality dimension of hypochondrias is (p=0/000, r=0/801) and personality depression dimension (p=0/000, r=0/582) will have positive impacts on the affected peoples' perceived pain. However, anti-social personality dimension (p=0/245, r=0/095), obsession (p=0505, r=-0/055), paranoia (p=0/556, r=0/047), Schizophrenia (p=0/052, r=0/159), Hypomania (p=0/058, r=0/155) will have no specialeffects on the level of perceived pain among affected people.
